Vampires are a native 'species' to Aronia, in that the race came to be on Aronia. Aronian vampires stand apart from those of myth and legend in several key ways, though they do share some similarities. Similarly they require the consumption of blood, and also benefit from enhanced physical and magical prowess, as well as heightened senses. They regenerate from injury rapidly and can live indefinitely. Their differences are that they are living, breathing humanoids, they do not burn or sparkle in the sun, and they have a very special ability that other vampires do not possess. They also cannot be created through curse or magic. Aronian vampires are created strictly through bite or birth. This is because vampirism in Aronia is viral. It is transmitted only through the placenta and via nodules in the fangs much like venom. Further, in order for a vampire to be born, the mother must be a vampire. There are no such thing as 'half-vampires'. Vampires who had only a vampire mother are generally just a weaker vampire.

There is a special amount of respect given to these beings due to the status their leader affords them. Their goddess is also the Queen of Endymion. All native vampires on Aronia are either sired or the children of sired by the goddess, save a select two bloodlines that were derived from Lilith and Caine's sired. Those bloodlines still hail the goddess, as she was the first born vampire (born of Lillith and Caine) on Aronia and the most powerful of her kind. This status also has lifted the species from voracious killer to being just another citizen. Requiring a constant blood supply to feed the virus they carry certainly does pressurize relationships between vampires and non-vampires, but over the centuries special laws and rules pertaining to feeding have helped to ease the anxiety felt by a non-vampire. Criminals set for death, or injured individuals who are beyond saving often serve as blood sustenance for the average vampire.

Many of the vampires live in or around Ombra di Notta, Endymion, though they are fully spread across Aronia and can be found living among almost all other races. They live and work in a variety of roles from merchants to bounty hunters. Due to their prolonged existence, some families press their children to attend Balay University for proper training in magic and other valuable skills. Some send their youth to learn at the feet of the Goddess and the High Priestess so that they may serve as priests and priestesses to the temple or even as diplomats. Some simply enjoy the serenity of country living and settle down to become farmers. Their roles are highly varied to preference.

Vampire Abilities

Vampire Appearance

The most notable abilities that vampires have are their physical capabilities and senses. They are extremely strong and fast, and their senses are heightened well beyond that of a human. They regenerate very quickly from injury, but cannot properly regenerate without blood. In these ways, they are very much like the legendary vampire. However, they have a special form that other vampires do not. It is a fail-safe of the vampire virus to keep the host alive.

For the Goddess, High Priestess, and a rare few, this form can be shifted into at will. For all others, it will only surface if the physical body is damaged to near death. The form is called the Rovina and it is a bestial thing that transforms from the body of the host. The flesh inflates and then hardens into a grey scale that is near impenetrable. It's blood is acidic and can burn through any weapons that are slung at it. The Rovina stands roughly 10 feet tall and weighs no less than 400 pounds. It will rampage until the host, which is formed into a protective internal sac, recovers from their injuries. The creature will wear down after that point until it 'dies' and the process of shedding the Rovina is like being birthed. Any clothing or belongings are destroyed by the Rovina blood so the host will return nude.

Vampire History

Vampires look like normal humans, though they tend to have a healthful glow. Regenerative capabilities allow for vampires to almost always appear healthy even if they were infected at an advanced age. Being turned does not turn back the years but it does repair any maladies of the body or mind. Unlike the vampires of legend, not all Aronian vampires are lithe, figureless people. Because they are living and breathing they still require other forms of food than blood. In fact, their heightened sense of taste makes the ritual of eating all the more enjoyable to them. It is not unusual to see a curvy vampires all the way to truly obese vampires. Their abilities, combined with an extreme metabolic rate, increase their need for high calorie intake. They also can rapidly fluctuate in weight. This is perhaps also their largest weakness - they require food and blood to survive. Without one or they other they can actually die. Eating frequency is dependent on how much they exert themselves.

The first vampires appeared in Aronia more than a thousand years previous the beginning of the storyline. The first two humans to become vampires were Lillith and Caine. They came into contact with the virus unexpectedly and, realizing shortly after what had happened, destroyed the location so that others could not be infected again in the same way. They did not want their daughter, Gwendylan, to contract the virus. They understood little about it and did not want to destroy her future as they worried theirs may have been. It was only a couple of years after that when their second daughter was born.

Unlike Gwendylan, Gwenefiere was born a pure vampire and the strongest of them all. Being young, though, Gwenefiere's elder sister easily tricked her into infecting her. Gwendylan was not a mentally well young woman and in turn used her vampirism to torture the other beings in the Forbidden forest. By her 18th birthday, she had killed or maimed hundreds of others. The legend of her has not been forgotten and it is still used as a frightening lesson for young children who behave badly. Gwendylan was sacrificed as a promise of peace between the Ancients and the first Vampires. She was also payment for the help of the Ancients in building Ombra di Notta. Gwenefiere was the other half of the payment. She would serve as the ruler of their city and leader of their kind.

From that point, individuals were carefully selected by the original vampires to share the gift. One such individual was High Priestess Victoria - the high priestess of the vampires and a vampire nearly as strong as the goddess. She was the first turned person by Gwenefiere as the Ancients indirectly suggested. It was promised that she should take care in giving the gift of her first bite due to the strength that it would give. Most others who had been sired were more careless and this led to a fair population growth over the following centuries. Most vampires will visit the temple at Ombra di Notta at least annually to bask in the favor of High Priestess Victoria and Gwenefiere. This has developed relationships with groups and individuals who now act within many cities as ambassadors and diplomats of the race.
